Final Landscape
This is a 1 hour pastel drawing of a skyline. The rule of thirds is present in the image and the tower is the focal point of the image as it intersects the points of interests on the rule of thirds. Also due to the composition of the clouds and the sky, the tower stands out more and because of this the tower is the first part of the image that is seen when looking at it. The tower is also in an area of interest on the rule of thirds. The light and shadow on the clouds creates a dramatic composition as the eye is led from the tower to the light on the top of the cloud. Then the eye is led down along the shadow to the light in the middle of the image on the cloud. This carries on as the eye is led to the light on the small cloud at in the background. This shows an implied line in the image. In the image there are a few layers which create depth. There are the houses and tower in the foreground, the hills in the midground, the clouds in background layer 1 and the sky in the far background. There is some tonal variety in the clouds as the darker blue has been blended with white, grey and the yellow. The colours and tonal values give a sense of 3 dimensions in the clouds forms. There is contrast between the foreground which is less detailed than the sky because of the loose work done in the clouds to give form whereas the building have a simple shape drawn.
Final Figure Drawing
This is a 100 minute charcoal drawing of a male figure where there is a strong light source at the top right. There is a good pose shown in the image as the person seems to be leaning to one side and also they have tilted their head. Also there are many great highlights on the face and a large tonal variety in the values. There are some strong highlights on the side of the face and there are also some subtle highlights around the eyes and mouth. There are also some good hues shown on the scarf as it is draped around his neck. There is also some contrast between the colours and changes in hue on the neck and bottom of the cheek and this create a strong terminator line. There is good proportion in the image. Even though it is not a full body image there pose and structure of the bones can be seen from shoulder to shoulder, and the curvature of the spine.
Final Still Life
This is a 50 minute still life of some objects using
charcoal. There are some strong highlights and some strong shadows in this
image. On the larger jug there is a strong highlight on the right hand side. This
is a focal point of the image as it is in the rule of thirds and also the
highlight carries on onto the smaller jug. This leads the eye from the bigger
jug to the smaller and curving around to the small jugs handle and this creates
an implied line. The shading and line on the jugs help to give it shape, volume
and form as the line curve show that the shape is 3 Dimensional. The objects
are reflecting and refracting the light which is coming from the top right. The
background adds depth to the image and contrasts the strong highlights on the
objects making them stand out more and therefore drawing the person’s attention.
There are some shadows cast by the objects but most of the light passes through
them because they are translucent and transparent.
Facial Expression
This is a 5 minute drawing of facial expressions using charcoal. The hand in the image helps give a better impression of the mood with the facial expression. The model seems bored or tired and this can be seen by looking at the shape of the mouth. There are many different tonal values in the image especially on the cheek where some of the light is shining onto it or is maybe reflected from around the room. There is a strong highlight going down the face, hand and arm and this is showing the direction of the light. There are also some smaller highlights which give a good sense of shape and form in the head and face. For example there are some small highlights around the eye and also on the chin. The shading follows the skin and muscles and the shading curves around when it get to the chin. There is good proportion in the image. There are some angles created by the light, like on the hand or on the neck. Also on the arm there are some of the darker parts going down and these show the structure underneath the skin in the arms as these are bones and tendons. The pose captures the mood and emotion, along with the face, in the model. The form of the model also seems to be closed as she has her head in her hand.
Facial Anatomy
This is a 10 minute drawing of facial anatomy of a male using the long edge of a graphite stick. There are some strong shadows and highlights in the image and the main focal point of the image is the shadow on the nose. This is a focal point as it stands out because there are two highlights on each side of it. Also the shape of the nose is well drawn and there is also a small highlight at the bottom of the nose. Also the nose is in the rule of thirds in this image so it is a focal point. The light is coming from the right so all the strong highlights are down the right side of the face. The head has good proportion as measurement was used and also the eyes are well spaced apart. There are some construction lines in the drawing and also this has helped to get the proportion right. The finer detail using the tip of the graphite stick is done well as this has given shape to the head and the shading has given form. There are some good tonal values on the check
