Anatomy Refresher

This is a 90 minute self portrait using graphite. There is some good shading on the face and there are different tonal values used. The light is coming from the top right and this creates a strong shadow diagonally down the face as the light is blocked by the glasses. There are some strong highlights especially around the eye and right check because of the glasses. There is a change in hue on the shadow for the side of the glasses and the highlight on the other side. This is the focal point because of the contrast between the colours and because it creates a line. There is a great implied line on the face going from the hair in the top right and down along the highlight. It then goes down the side of the nose and across the right cheek to the glasses shadow. The proportion in the image is good because of measurement. Also there are different directions of shading in the image. This is because on the face and neck the marks follow the bone and muscle structure underneath. There is some good shading and tonal variety on the right side of the shirt and this also helps to show which direction the light is coming from.
