Still Life

This is a 30 min composition of some still life objects, using graphite, which have reflective properties. There are a few objects in this drawing and they are reflecting the surroundings. There is a vase on its own in the middle but this is not orphaned because of the different tonal values in the drapery which connects it to the rest of the objects. There are a few implied line including one which goes from the vase in the middle along the fold in the drapery to the left and then round the drapery which on top of the table. The implied line then goes along the drapery up on the right hand side towards the vase at the top. Another is one which uses the shadows of the vase at the top and then travels diagonally down to the left along the shadow on the drapery and the curves around the underside of the sphere and carries along the fold in the drapery. The objects in this drawing have some highlights on the as they are reflecting the light from around the room. The shading on the objects is good because its shows 3 dimensional form as the shading curves around the objects. The shading also adds volume, mass and depth to the objects. The drapery in this composition has many different values as there is a lot of natural light around the room and also some of that light is being reflected off the objects because of the chrome surfaces. Maybe a different vantage point could have been chosen as the rule of thirds does not apply in this image as the items are too central and a background as well as a floor could have been added so the composition doesn’t look like it is floating. There is also some foreshortening at the top of the vase in the middle but the top of the other vase cannot be seen because the horizon line is going across between the two vases.
